Our mission was to document the wildlife in the remote desert valleys providing images and video of the species that exist there, in particular the semi-endangered Balochi Urial - a rare species of wild sheep. In recent years after previously being banned, hunting licences have been granted for this species in Pakistan under careful supervision to encourage the growth of conservation hunting’ a practice where expensive hunting licence fees are charged to hunting enthusiasts.
The proceeds from the hunting go into conserving the environment where the species lives and provides local people with education and an incentive to work with the government to monitor and conserve the wildlife in their region. However, ‘Conservation hunting’ is a controversial practice and often takes place in countries where there is reasonable cause to doubt that the funding from the hunting licences would be effectively used for its intended purpose.
Spending a week living in the desert valleys of the national park and ‘Searching’ for the Urial was an incredible experience. Locked put this short film together to document the kindness of the local people and to convey the sense of awe in this incredibly beautiful and untouched place and its wildlife.
